From Behind the Camera to Front and Center: Tech Tips for Moms

Let’s be real: most moms don’t avoid photos because they don’t care—they avoid them because they’re the ones taking them. You’re the one capturing the cute outfits, the birthday candles, the snuggles on the couch. And that’s beautiful. But when you’re always behind the camera, you start to disappear from the story.

It’s time to change that.

The good news? You don’t need fancy gear or a professional photographer on call every weekend to be in your own family’s photos. You just need a few small changes in your routine—and the willingness to step forward. Here are some easy, mom-approved tech tips to actually be in the frame:

1. Use the Timer on Your Phone

It sounds simple, but it works. Set your phone on a shelf, stack of books, or a mini tripod, tap the timer, and go join your family. You’ll be surprised how much it changes the energy of the photo when you’re in it too.

2. Get a Tripod or Phone Stand

These are affordable and make a huge difference. Many even come with Bluetooth remotes, so you can snap photos without running back and forth. Great for group shots or everyday moments at home.

3. Go Candid

Not every photo needs to be posed. Some of the best pictures happen when no one’s looking directly at the camera. Prop up your phone during story time, baking cookies, or backyard play and just let it record. You can grab stills later—and they’ll feel real and alive.

4. Let Someone Else Hold the Camera

Whether it’s your partner, a friend, or even one of your kids, hand it off. Let go of control for a moment and allow someone else to capture you in the everyday magic.

5. Schedule a Family Photo Session—And Be in It

Hiring a photographer doesn’t have to be a big production. A good photographer will help you feel comfortable and natural, and will make sure you are part of the story—not just the one documenting it.

You don’t need to be in every photo. But you do deserve to be in some. Because your kids will look back one day and want to see your face, your arms around them, your joy in the moment. Those images will mean the world to them. And they should mean something to you, too.

Tired of being the family historian with no photos of yourself? I’d love to help change that. My sessions are laid-back and intentional—with a focus on connection, not perfection.

Let’s chat about your next family session and get you back where you belong: right in the middle of the memories.
